by Kara Manning

On this Saturday before Christmas, in the midst of Chanukah and on the brink of the winter solstice, it seemed a fine time to get festive and deck the halls in holly and ivy. So on UKNY at 11 tonight, nothing but songs of the season from Tracey Thorn, Smoke Fairies, Scritti Politti, Laura Mvula (pictured), Los Campesinos! and others.  We'll be mostly snowbound, warmed by wassail, mince pies and some wistful asides ... but expect some cheery caroling too.

Please join me tonight at 10 on "The Bottomless Pit" for the first of two wrapping-up exercises for 2014, both of which will include some holiday season music by Kay Martin and Her Bodyguards, The Pogues and others. I'll also recap 2014 from a personal standpoint, talk about some interesting work experiences I had this year and play some tracks by Drivin' and Cryin', Steve Wynn, Kathryn Williams and Neill MacColl, plus lots of others.

Expect plenty of winter and holiday songs on "Idiot's Delight"® at 8 which airs on this eve of the Winter Solstice, marking the shortest period of daylight and the longest period of night on Sunday. Vin Scelsa hopes that this last edition of "Idiot's Delight,"® before Christmas (and during Chanukah) offers a good soundtrack to wrap gifts, bake cookies, fry latkes and drape tinsel by! Also, he'll have a non-seasonal selection with songs from the new Cracker album, Berkeley To Bakersfield, and an "Idiot's Delight"® tangent inspired by a reference to the old song "Redwing" in Over The Rhine's song "Blood Oranges In The Snow," found on their album of the same name.
