WFUV Staff Profile:

George Bodarky

WFUV's News & Public Affairs Director and Cityscape host, Saturdays 7:30-8am.

Covering New York day and night

George Bodarky

Like several other members of the WFUV air staff, News & Public Affairs Director George Bodarky began his radio career as a Fordham University student. Originally headed toward Fordham Law, Bodarky was "bit by the journalism bug" during his undergraduate work at WFUV in the late 1980s and instead went directly into broadcasting.

"WFUV literally changed my life," he says. "I loved what I was doing here." Though he started out performing satellite engineering work and organizing records (yes, actual vinyl), Bodarky was recruited by the station's news director to pitch in on election coverage and soon found himself drawn into the world of broadcast journalism. Before he knew it, he was majoring in communications and writing off law school altogether.

After a decade in commercial radio and television, most recently at a group of four radio stations in the Hudson Valley, Bodarky returned to WFUV in the spring of 2001 to help Julianne Welby run the news department, and took over the top spot in 2008. In addition to anchoring newscasts, he devotes much of his time to training current Fordham students in the art of broadcasting, the part of his job he finds most rewarding. "Seeing their progress, watching their determination is worth its weight in gold," he says.

Bodarky spends a lot of time away from the news desk, exploring the streets of New York for our benefit. "I love to walk," he says. "I will just walk around the city and discover new neighborhoods, new communities... Much of what I bring to the radio is a new experience to me that I hope resonates with the listeners as well."

Bodarky also hosts the Cityscape program on Saturday mornings, interviewing the official and unofficial representatives of the Big Apple and telling their stories. [more info]

A native of the Bronx, Bodarky now resides in Westchester.

George Bodarky can be heard on weekday newscasts, on Cityscape Saturdays 7:30-8am, and on Wednesday mornings at 7:45am.
