WFUV's resident Mac and Unix geek keeps the station web site going -- and going, and going...

How to get a job in radio

Laura Fedele

New Media Director Laura Fedele helms WFUV's popular web site. Since October 2000, Laura has been writing, designing, editing and constructing wfuv.org. An FUV MVP, Laura's the one who produces the pages for the station's e-newsletter and, with help from the WFUV staff, makes sure that the playlists, archives, on-air schedules, events calendars and thousands of other pages on the WFUV site are always updated.

"I discovered WFUV while driving around Connecticut in my car in 1994. I heard an Ani DiFranco song on the radio for the first time and knew I'd found something interesting," says Fedele, a New Jersey native who listened to Vin Scelsa and Dennis Elsas for years. "One day I heard a DJ announce that FUV was looking for someone to design their web site. I emailed the station right away and asked them not to hire anyone until I could write a resume! Then I kept emailing every week with ideas for the site. Finally they surrendered and gave me the job." Laura's persistence paid off: the web site she's built is a user-friendly treasure trove of archived shows and searchable playlists, tailor-made for the obsessive music fan.

Laura's Internet technology know-how has kept wfuv.org well ahead of many other radio station web sites. Offering FUV listeners nationwide live streams and vast program archives, wfuv.org attracts about a million page views per month. She also works with NPR Online as a member of their pilot group of radio station web directors, which advises NPR Online on content offerings and technical standards.

A true music fan herself, Laura can't believe her luck in getting to be part of the WFUV team: "Working at FUV, I'm surrounded by interesting people who love music even more than I do. I work alongside some of my radio idols. Plus, I've met artists like Michael Stipe, Bruce Springsteen, Tony Bennett, Shelby Lynne and Gomez - and yes, I got to shake the hand of The Edge when they played here. I get to combine my work with my personal passion. What could be better than that?!"

Miss Sugar Boogie Jackson

When she's not updating wfuv.org (web people don't exactly get "weekends" or "vacations"), Laura enjoys going to concerts, taking short walks on the beach, doing crossword puzzles, cooking and reading. She thanks her beloved PowerBook G4 for making it all easier than it looks, and her puppy Miss Sugar for keeping her company while she works at home in Nyack.
