Beck Eyes A Starry Song Reader Collection

by Kara Manning
Beck

Although Beck unconventionally released his Song Reader album in 2012 as sheet music, the collection of tunes will finally receive a recorded release on July 29 via Capitol Records. The all-star cadre of collaborators warbling Beck songs includes Jack White, Jarvis Cocker, Jeff Tweedy, Laura Marling, Jason Isbell, Norah Jones, Swamp Dogg, Jack Black and others. Beck will sing just one song on the album, "Heaven's Ladder."

Like a burst of brilliant light that overcomes the dark, Beck has returned with his first album in nearly six years: Morning Phase. He wasn't invisible in the years following 2008's Modern Guilt -- in fact, he was working on quite a few different projects, and endured a difficult time dealing with a spinal injury. Still, it was an unusual absence.

Newport Folk is one of the festivals I most look forward to every summer. The waterfront location is just breathtaking. I took about a hundred photos of boats, seagulls and sunsets, and of course probably twice that of all the bands and musicians. (I'll let the professional photographers share their pics with you instead of my camera phone pics).

by Marisa Frydman

Thank Goodness Its' Friday! We have a very exciting show lined up for the Whole Wide World tonight. Join Rita and I for a conversation with the legendary group, Tom Tom Club. Rocking out since 1981, the duo will be discussing their newly released EP, Downtown Rockers, as well as taking over the airwaves for a guest DJ set. Check out their new music video for the title track below. We will also be wrapping up coverage of this week's CMJ music festival by playing some of her favorite bands of the showcase including Savoir Adore and Wax Poetic.
