Ben Harper

Ben and Ellen Harper - FUV Live - 2014

by Carmel Holt

We've had Ben Harper into the studio many times over his career, but this is the first time that we've had the privilege of meeting Ellen Harper, Ben’s mom. The occasion for the visit from Ben and Ellen was their new collaborative album, Childhood Home. It features 6 tracks written by Ben and 4 tracks written by Ellen. After listening to the album, it is clear that this is a very gifted family of musicians. Ben and Ellen Harper recently stopped by Studio A to share some of their music and to talk about the new album during this edition of FUV Live.

Take the elastic rhythms of Charlie Musselwhite's harmonica and top it off with Ben Harper's killer guitar licks and vocals, and it conjures up something of an old juke joint: sometimes wretched, sometimes treacherous, but always a gas. Their new album is Get Up!, and from a great hang I had with the guys at Avatar Studios, you can hear that magic live.

After steady gigging around LA, Ben Harper scored a record deal and released his debut album, 'Welcome To The Cruel World.' It was a stripped-down but powerful introduction, and the reason Ben made his first appearance at WFUV for an interview with Darren DeVivo.

Earlier this year, Joseph Arthur asked his friend Ben Harper if he wanted to work together on a few tracks. They soon invited George Harrison's son Dhani to join the project, and three days after going into the studio, they came out as a new band-Fistful of Mercy-with a new record-'As I Call You Down.' Recently, Fistful Of Mercy talked with 'FUV's Darren DeVivo, and played a set of live songs from the album. [10/7/10]
