Chris Smither

Chris Smither - FUV Live - 2014

by Darren DeVivo

A profound songwriter, Chris Smither draws deeply from a combination of Blues, American Folk music, modern poets, and philosophers. With his signature gravelly voice and dazzling guitar work, he has frequented festivals, coffeehouses, and club circuits around the U.S., Canada, and Europe since the 1960s and isn't showing any signs of slowing down. This year, Smither marked his 50th year of music-making, and to celebrate, the New Orleans-raised songwriter recently released, Still on the Levee, a double album of re-recordings of his most signature and classic songs. Chris Smither recently stopped by Studio A to talk about and play us some of his music. We’ll hear that conversation and performance during this episode of FUV Live.

Chris Smither - Words and Music - 2012

by Darren DeVivo

Since the growing folk scene of mid-1960s Boston, Chris Smither has proven himself a master of modern acoustic blues. He's just released his twelfth album, Hundred Dollar Valentine, and it's his first ever to feature only his own tunes, so he brought his guitar and his stomp board to FUV to play us a few of them.

Chris Smither's new album is called, 'Time Stands Still,' and while he may have earned the right to stop the clock after a successful forty-odd year career---artistically his music has definitely not reached a standstill. For one thing he's performing and touring as a trio, and as he told FUV's Darren Devivo during a recent interview in studio-A, his songwriting is still going in new directions. (12/10/09)
