Chuck Prophet

Chuck Prophet - FUV Live - 2015

by Carmel Holt

On an album that could have been titled “Invasion of the Tech Monsters”, Chuck Prophet follows up his 2012 celebration of San Francisco, Temple Beautiful, with observations on the changing effects that the tech community has had on his beloved city. Night Surfer is Prophet's thirteenth studio effort and it stands in contrast to his last album, not only lyrically but sonically. While Temple Beautiful was mostly a stripped-back affair, Night Surfer plays like an old, favorite Rolling Stones album, complete with horns and strings.

On the surface, Chuck Prophet's new album, Temple Beautiful, showcases his talent for writing hook-filled rock songs. Look a little deeper, and you'll see that Prophet is also a fine historian, storyteller and tour guide. The subject here is San Francisco, and we see it through Chuck's eyes in this return visit to FUV. [recorded: 05/23/12]

Chuck Prophet took a 3 year break from recording his own material, and even though other projects kept him busy, the urge to write crept back in. The result is the new album 'Soap & Water,' and tonight Chuck performs a few of the songs live and solo during a visit with Claudia Marshall.
