Delta Spirit

Delta Spirit - FUV Live - 2014

by Carmel Holt

Creating a unique cross between indie rock and alt-country, Delta Spirit has been gracing us with their sound for almost a decade and they’re releasing their fourth album, Into the Wide today. On the new album, front man Matthew Vasquez focuses on a more narrative, folk-like storytelling through his lyrics. The songs are a bit darker than previous releases, but the album certainly shows the tremendous growth of the band and is arguably their best yet. Delta Spirit recently stopped by Studio A to play some of the new material and talk about it. We’ll hear that conversation and performance on this episode of FUV Live.

They came from punk in San Diego, but they've arrived in Brooklyn with an impassioned roots-rock that really shines on the live stage. So, we invited Delta Spirit for a slightly stripped-down FUV Live show, which spanned the band's three-album catalog and rocked Rockwood Music Hall.

'Ode to Sunshine' is an appropriate album title for a San Diego band, but the sound of Delta Spirit is less beach and more of a rootsy, indie rock mix. Check out duo versions of songs from Delta Spirit's debut CD as as Matt and Kelly from the band talk with host Rita Houston in Studio-A.

The band Delta Spirit is not about being conventional or even "marketable," but they do love playing music with gritty rock and soul influences. Their sophomore follow-up, History from Below, won't be out for two more months, but they were itching to show off some new tunes to FUV's Alisa Ali, and to chat about how this time their album was recorded in an actual studio--albeit, one that had a lot of chickens roaming around.
