Heartless Bastards

Heartless Bastards: SXSW 2015

by Laura Fedele

Heartless Bastards are fresh off a tour with Bob Seger and back home in Austin, TX, just in time for a world of crazy to show up for SXSW 2015. They're contributing some of their own crazy by playing at Willie Nelson's big annual bash outside of town, and for contrast also doing a kids show during the fest, renamed 'The Heartless Bathtubs' for the occasion.

This should be a big year for singer/guitarist/songwriter Erika Wennerstrom and the band—for one thing, they're celebrating the 10-year anniversary of the release of their debut album, Stairs and Elevators. And according to Twitter in late January, the recording sessions they started in August have resulted in a new finished album.

“If she wasn’t so good, she’d look like an actress fronting a side project,” says Austin 360.

Well, she is that good.

Ohio-born and Austin-based Heartless Bastards (@HeartlessBstrds) has gone through some lineup changes, but the heart of the band is Erika Wennerstrom. She writes the songs for the four of them to flesh out together, and it’s her big voice that’ll echo in your head.

Take Five with Heartless Bastards

Got to have rock and roll? Last year, Heartless Bastards had the solution with their latest album, Arrow. It was another riff-filled step forward for Erika Wennerstrom and company, who FUV started playing in 2009 with their album, The Mountain. For the band's latest visit to Studio A, Heartless Bastards braved being live on FUV at Noon (early in rock star time), and this performance of "Got To Have Rock and Roll" ended up as one of 20 live recordings on FUV Live 15.
