Monsters of Folk

M. Ward - Words and Music - 2012

by Alisa Ali

It's hard to pin M. Ward down because the man is in demand. As a songwriter, multi-instrumentalist and ace collaborator in She & Him and Monster of Folk, he could call it a day and we'd already be impressed. But he doesn't, and the seventh studio album under his own name sounds mighty impressive. It's called A Wasteland Companion, and we were treated to some great live music and conversation, when Ward visited Studio A. [recorded: 05/11/12]

The Monsters of Folk, are a super-group, but it's not because they're monsters-no--it's because, they're a band that consists of Conor Oberst of Bright Eyes, M. Ward from She and Him, Jim James from My Morning Jacket, and Saddle Creek Records' Mike Mogis. Conor, Jim, and M. Ward joined Alisa Ali to discuss their tour, how M. Ward found Conor's basement, and how this project and the self-titled album was a nice respite from their usual highly successful projects. (11/4/09)
