The Alternate Side:
Now in Effect

Can't get enough indie music? FUV's new music channel was made for you.

Listen online or with an HD Radio

The Alternate Side (logo)

The Alternate Side is your source to find, hear, watch, and read about new and local music. You'll find streaming audio, studio and concert videos, blogs, artist news, concert info, and much more. This destination for new music is live on the web at thealternateside.org and on HD Radio in the New York area at WFUV HD-3. Check it out and tell us what you think!

At The Alternate Side, you'll discover up-and-coming artists from around the corner and all over the musical landscape. TAS highlights the most exciting talent from the New York area, with new artists like Chairlift, MGMT and The Menahan Street Band alongside more established acts like TV On The Radio, The National, and Sonic Youth. You can even be your own DJ, building custom mp3 playlists from local artists who post their music on the site.

"With The Alternate Side, for the first time ever, there's an internet site and HD Radio channel devoted to emerging New York City artists and bands," says Rich McLaughlin, Content Director for TAS. "New York has always been known for its musical exports. Unless you happen to live here and be an avid venue-hopper, it's almost impossible to keep up with all the new music. And the best part is that people in Los Angeles, Dusseldorf or Tokyo will have the same access to the local music scene as someone living in Williamsburg."

The Alternate Side complements WFUV's existing channels, which continue on 90.7 FM and wfuv.org. [more info: Three FUV Channels]

Also: You can hear a sampling of the channel as 'The Alternate Side' show on WFUV On-Air and FUV Music, Friday nights from 10pm-Midnight.

Credit

Startup of The Alternate Side is made possible, in part, by leadership support from The New York State Music Fund, established by the New York State Attorney General at Rockefeller Philanthropy Advisors. The New York State Music Fund was created from a settlement agreement after the Attorney General's Office resolved investigations against major record companies that had violated state and federal laws prohibiting "pay for play" (also called "payola"). Support also comes from the Corporation for Public Broadcasting's Public Media Innovation Fund for the development of the web site's online social network, which brings together New York area musicians and music fans.
