The Basics:
You need:
(a) Windows Media Player - Stay upgraded when you can, it helps: Download Windows Media Player Here (for most operating systems)
(b) A good Internet connection (56K and up, or it skips like crazy).
If the site links don't automatically work for you, launch WMP yourself, then copy and paste this address into the 'Open URL' window: http://www.wfuv.org/wfuvlive.asx
If that doesn't work, copy and paste this one: http://wfuv-wm.streamguys.org/wfuv-onair
For more information, visit the Support Area on the Windows Media Web Site.
They have a page there that lists error codes and what they mean.
Frequently Asked Questions:
I can't connect. What's wrong?
If anything is amiss on our end, we'll post a notice on the Listen Live page. There could be any kind of interruption between your computers and ours that's causing trouble. Please try several times before emailing us. If it doesn't work after a day or two, reinstall Windows Media Player and try again. That fixes the vast majority of problems.
It still won't play, I get an error message.
If you get a message about a bad file type or missing proxy, check your Network Settings area for the Protocols window - make sure the HTTP and TCP boxes are checked. Usually it's a firewall problem (office or personal, like ZoneAlarm).
There are a lot of skips in the sound, and the player says "buffering."
Either you do not have a fast enough Internet connection to reliably listen to audio online, or there is network congestion going on. "Buffering" means that a few seconds are saved 'ahead' for you, so that tiny interruptions in service won't make you lose the sound, it gets taken out of that buffer instead. When that runs out, you hear skips. Try again when the network is less congested, or upgrade your Internet connection speed.
Why do I need a 56K modem to hear a 32K stream?
Well, the modem speed you have is the ideal, best-case scenario. Most of the time, actual performance is slower. While the stream is playing, check the Advanced window of WMP for a view of exactly how fast you're connecting.
Can I save the stream to listen to later?
No, Windows Media Player won't save the songs for you. We have the legal right to stream our live broadcast as it happens, but not to provide songs or shows for people to download. However, you can save WFUV as a 'favorite' and come back to listen to the live stream later. To add a shortcut to your list of favorites, under the Favorites menu, select Add Favorite.
Are there Windows Media Player choices for Mac?
If you have a non-Intel-based Mac, download Windows Media Player for Mac. If you have a (newer) Intel-based Mac, grab the Flip4Mac player.
Are there Windows Media Player choices for Linux?
Listeners have clued us in to these solutions for running Media Player files: MPlayer, which is free, or The CrossOver Plugin from CodeWeavers, for a little money. Or if your connection is fast enough, choose our MP3 Shoutcast Stream.
