We’re Not Ashamed

accordion

We admit it: we love an accordion! Put an accordion on just about any song and we swoon. Apparently, you do too judging by the responses we’re getting in the FUV question of the day, in honor of “Weird” Al Yankovic’s 50th birthday!

Great question. Accordian easily overlooked, but great in every song it’s heard in. I needed google for this morning’s list and was surprised by some of the suggestions.

    http://www.letspolka.com/2008/08/top-5-accordion-rock-songs/

My own suggestion was immediately: “4th of July, Asbury Park (Sandy)” The off-beat suggestion from the same album (and more pronounced accordian) is “Wild Billy’s Circus Story”

From the link above…. I particularly like “When I Paint My Masterpiece” by Bob Dylan and as done by the Band.

Someone says “How Can I Be Sure” by the Rascals. Not so sure about that one. Have to check it out.

How about the Felice Bros or Old Crow Medicine Show?

Looking forward to a great set later this morning.

Good morning! I hear accordian and I think Gorgol Bordello.. My fav is probably ” Not a Crime”

  5. Valerie on October 23rd, 2009

This is just too exciting to pass up. Do you have the Planet Squeezebox set of 3 Compact Discs and 56 page book on the best accordion music all over the world?
HERE is where you will find interesting music.
    Disc 2 Tracks 10 thru14 and 17 and 18. Also track 3 track 2.

Want only one? Disc 2 Track 11 (Dominican musician Siano Arias)….passed away.

Oh. I took accordion lessons in the 60’s. I put down the accordion for 40 years and picked it up about 5 years ago to use it in my classroom with my ESL students. I’m so excited to rekindle my love for this instrument and in my wild vision of retirement (very soon) I intend to brighten up my next career…………………………..Look up AAA (American Accordionist Association). I attended the Lifetime Achievement Awards dinner in Sept. for Faithe Deffner. Some of the greatest accordion players gave a concert and I was just 6 feet from the stage. OK, yes, I’m the same person who called in the song yesterday.

okay, so you have to play something from “Graceland” because it was listening to “Accordion Jive Hits” that inspired paul simon to make the album. also bruce hornsby who makes accordion playing part of his live shows. rounding it out with something from the subdudes an los lobos would work nicely. here are my suggestions.

The Boy in the Bubble (Paul Simon)
Jacob’s Ladder (Bruce Hornsby) from “Here Come the Noisemakers”
    Need Somebody (The Subdudes)
All I Wanted to Do Was Dance (Los Lobos)

The Band When I paint My Masterpiece

  10. Jim on October 23rd, 2009

After thinking of 50 or so incredible accordion songs from Louisiana, I decided to go in a completely different direction…rock &/or folk songs.

Arguably, the greatest contemporary band utilizing the accordion is Los Lobos. Two great examples are “Serenata Nortena” and “Corrido #1”.
    Other worthy examples include:
The Beach Boys “Wouldn’t It Be Nice”.

Bruce Springsteen “4th of July, Asbury Park (Sandy)”.

    Talking Heads “Road To Nowhere”.

The Beatles “All You Need Is Love”.

    The Who “Squeeze Box”.

They Might Be Giants “Istanbul, Not Constantinople”.

    Have a great weekend!

Good Morning you Rock and Rooters:

Well I cannot say that I know many song that have an accordian in them but the one that is playing in my head right now is a song by the Mavericks…Dance the Night Away….I believe there is a very good accordian player playing along with that great band and of course that unmistakable soulful, swoony voice of one of my favs…Raul Malo..

  12. David on October 23rd, 2009

Any They Might Be Giants song, esp Triangle Man or Istanbul, Not Constantinople.

  13. Laurie on October 23rd, 2009

Hi, I hope you’ll play a couple of my acordian favorites-

    Ahhh…. Friday! At last!

    Accordion choices? Hmmmm….

Buckwheat Zydeco – Hot Tamale Baby or Hey Good Lookin’ r

Bruce Springsteen – 4th of July, Asbury Park

Am sure these are not unusual choices but some days, gotta leave it at the obvious.

how about “rockin chair” by the band?

  21. Bin on October 23rd, 2009

Hello, and thank you for providing my morning music geek-out.

    My according picks are:

“Omaha” by Counting Crows (the accordion lead in the intro puts the instrument front and center for the song, and besides, it’s a good song from a classic album)
“That Was Your Mother” by Paul Simon (Zydeco ‘cordion)
“Start Wearing Purple” by Gogol Bordello (if only because the time I’ve heard them on the radio is for a Terry Gross interview, and we all know she’s no match for Claudia!)

    Have a great weekend

  22. Bruce on October 23rd, 2009

That was your mother, from Graceland. Gotta love Rockin Dopsie!

  23. Jules on October 23rd, 2009

    Cut to the chase–

There’s that great Hooters song (?)And We Danced, but on to other issues.

Today would be a good day to play Do the Mouse as a tribute to Soupy

And if you need an Al Yankovic suggestion, please consider Albequerque, which is such a great nod to Dan Bern

    Be well

  24. Chris on October 23rd, 2009

    Frankie’s gun – felice bros

Are you tired of playing it? [I never get sick of hearing it!]

Is it really an accordion, or a concertina?

    Frankie’s Gun! by Felice Bros.

  31. lo on October 23rd, 2009

    FLACO JIMINEZ
    CARL FINCH from Brave Combo

    There’s always Franie’s gun….

    Have a nice weekend.

  34. Fred on October 23rd, 2009

accordion song (tasty accordion part): Vienna Teng, I Don’t Feel So Well, from Dreaming Through the Noise

comment: Sometimes a cover sounds like a bad idea but turns out great. More often, not. Don’t get me wrong, I love Dylan, I love early Dylan, and I love (not strong enough word) Lucinda Williams, BUT her cover of Positively 4th Street is an example of the second kind. It’s so bad, I would sooner hear Scarlett Johansson sing Tom Waits (no, don’t do it!).

    Have a great day!

  35. Dan on October 23rd, 2009

“Cherry Bomb” by John Mellencamp from The Lonesome Jubilee.

Frankie’s Gun by the Felice Brothers is a shoe-in.

  37. Jennifer on October 23rd, 2009

so how about the Italian version of polka, a folk song called Che La Luna that was featured in The Godfather.

    Have a lovely day :)

  38. Jim on October 23rd, 2009

One my favorite tracks on any of your City Folk Live CDs is Rick Danko’s Twilight on IV. Less prominent accordion, but perhaps my favorite Lucinda Williams song, Still I Long for Your Kiss. The Professor, Roy Bittan on accordion on both I believe. A bit melancholy for a Friday morning, but a couple of really great songs, nonetheless.

  39. Patrick on October 23rd, 2009

Here are two classic accordion songs.

I’m off today, so can even listen to the set! I’m of Polish descent — did
you get any polka requests? My favorite polka is the “She’s Too Fat
Polka” — if you can even find it to play it, I’d be very impressed.

  43. Chris on October 23rd, 2009

Accordian songs? Has to be something from the Texas Tornados. One of my personal favorites is “Who were you thinking of” You just have to love those lyrics: “Ah squeeze it baby” The accordian that is.

‘course you could go for the Who’s “Squeeze Box”.

Happy Friday and have a great weekend…

  44. Don on October 23rd, 2009

I sent you an email before but forgot to tell you where i’m from.
My name is Don fron KIngs Park New York.
Buckwheat Zydeco music is accordian based, and is so awsome.
If you can play anything from him it would be great.

  45. Chris on October 23rd, 2009

Wow these accordian songs just come out like a flood.
I just wanted to add Emmylou and Flaco Jimenez on “West Texas Waltz.

The entire Zydaco genre is all accordion How About some Buckwheat Zydaco

  49. Helen OE on October 23rd, 2009

For the real Weird Al completists (you know who you are), Al contributes a rare non-comedic accordion part to a song called “Pua Pi Anuhea,” the sixth track on Ried Kapo Ku’s “Here Comes The Sun.” It’s a lovely song.

  50. Rob on October 25th, 2009

It surprises me how little the accordion is used for other types of music; jazz, rock, classical, country. It has the capability to play anything and sound like a band with just one guy doing it.

You don’t always have to put on your polka face when you think of accordions.

    Regards,

    Rob
