It’s election day today; There is no shortage of songs about politics. Is there a musical message you’d like to send or a song that expresses what’s on your mind as you go to the polls?

Know your Rights by the Clash sums it up for me.

  2. Joe on November 3rd, 2009

Some of the references may be dated, but the sentiment is just right…”Love Me, I’m a Liberal” by the inimitable Phil Ochs (preferably the live version).

  3. Klara on November 3rd, 2009

Norah Jones – My Dear Country is perfect for your Question of the Day.

  4. Kim on November 3rd, 2009

“Just Enough for the City” Marvin Gaye

Although I’m sure I’m not the only one with that brilliant idea ;)

  5. Joyce on November 3rd, 2009

Kiss Me Miss Libery by John Wesley Harding

With the economy the way it is (my husband has been out of work for 6 months now) how about US Blues by the Grateful Dead??

  7. Mary Ann on November 3rd, 2009

I know this is so obvious but it just comes to mind first – “We Won’t Get Fooled Again” by the Who.

Maybe after some more caffeine I’ll be more creative! Thanks and don’t forget to vote.

I would think Stevie Wonder’s “ Big Brother” represents how many people feel on election day. I think it’s off of “Talking Book”

Stand up and be strong by kevin moore says it all!

Since I live in NJ which has the worst climate for business and the second highest overall tax rate in the nation (thank you, California), I suggest Between A Rock And A Hard Place by The Rolling Stones because that is where I’m really living.

  11. John on November 3rd, 2009

We Can Be Together by Grace and the Airplane. Don’t forget to bleep in the final soaring up against the wall chorus.

  12. Mike on November 3rd, 2009

I’ve had enough of reading things by neurotic, psychotic, pig headed politicians — just
    “Gimme Some Truth”
I’ve had enough of watching scenes of schizophrenic, egocentric, paranoic, prima donnas — just
“Gimme Some Truth” ————— Dr. Winston O’Boogie

Todd Snider’s ‘Conservative Christian Right-Wing Republican Straight White American Males’ which he played at the Wellmont show on Halloween.

Will DeVille has a great song about a Southern Politician, not sure of the name of it;? Political Man? Has some bite to it. His passing was one of the saddest events of the year. I had the good fortune of meeting him many yrs ago and seeing him last at BB Kings, but first at CBGBs with The Planets, Television, and The Ramones. Truly a great evening.

back again to “haunt” you after Halloween, All Saint’s Day and last night’s full moon! trying hard to think outside of the box, but the set would be amiss (but not a mess) without John’s “Gimme Some Truth”- but having heard it weekly on Vin Scelsa’s Idiot’s Delight for the entire(2008 election) year, please consider Mathew Sweet/Susanna Hoff’s version from “Under the Covers Vol.2″ or Sam Phillips’ from “Martini’s and Bikini’s”…BOTH would be really nice!…(also covered by Jakob Dylan (“…Dafur”) and Pearl Jam)…sadly, not much has changed since Lennon wrote it in 1970-1(“Imagine”CD-title song also a good one)… hopefully Barack will do better…it’s the infidelity/ sexual stuff that never ceases to amaze: Kennedy, Jesse Jackson, Clinton, Spitzer, Sanford, et.al. and especially low-life hypocrite pretty boy John Edwards (as he reportedly told one of his aids: “we’ll have a big wedding with Dave Mathews band (the North Carolina connection-do they have a political song?) someday” (presumably when his cancer-stricken wife has died)- this guy had the whole country fooled and was headed for the White House! ..tomorrow we can talk about the “evangelists”)….”Ram” On, (Cranberry Lake)

Voting…. I hope people will vote. Play the song “Man On Wire”.

  17. Bill on November 3rd, 2009

The best election song is an advisory tale by FRANK ZAPPA:

    “I’m The Slime”

Also, you can never go wrong with
    “Happy Days Are Here Again”

I’ll be working for Democratic candidates in Southern Westcheter, as I have since 1969.

Message to my crew: any song from Blood on the Tracks. Vote!

    Joe Henry – Our Song

The song says it all. No comment necessary.

BTW thanks for playing “Magnificent”. Good antidote for how I’m feeling about politics today.

    That’s an easy one:

    Changes by David Bowie.

  21. Jeff on November 3rd, 2009

Feeling like I’m choosing between the lesser of two evils again…

    How about Cream’s “The Politician.”

  22. Rosemary on November 3rd, 2009

Good Morning…Yes I do vote but I am never really happy with the choices that are put before me…Do We really trust those who insult each other and disregard any good that the other has done…so we take a chance and hope for he best…

My Request….Smiling Faces(the lyrics are perfect for those politicians who smile and shake the hands of those folksthey are trying to win over)…..By…Undisputed Truth or The Temptations….(im not sure )

  23. Tim on November 3rd, 2009

How about a little Lowel for the election? Apolitical Blues??

  24. Jennifer on November 3rd, 2009

I’m torn about Bloomberg – on the one hand he’s done a fine job as mayor, but his audacious changing of term limits – after vetoing a similar bill proposed by Giuliani in 2001- doesn’t sit well with me. I’m also disappointed in his negative campaign ads. Is that really necessary when you have such a comfortable lead and 8 years in the post?

Going to take some time today to review Bill Thompson’s record, and seriously considering giving him my vote.

John Lennon’s Just Gimme Some Truth sums up how I feel about this and most elections.

Have a politically thoughtful day :)

  25. Rich on November 3rd, 2009

Edgar Winter’s White Trash – The Roadwork Album

They didn’t get their start at the Apollo, but I love the MC’s introduction

  26. Bobby on November 3rd, 2009

Apparently I’m all for women’s rights on this election day because the only songs that come to mind for me are:

    Suffragette City by Bowie

Jet by Wings (“she’s a lady suffragette”)

  27. Deirdre on November 3rd, 2009

I’d like to suggest the song “Message to Michael” as sung by Dionne Warwick. I especially like the line, “Tell him to start for home today.” As announced in the news broadcast this morning, Mike Bloomberg is originally from Medford, Mass. I’d like to tell him, “Hit the road…Mike!”
The song has an interesting history, as noted on Wikipedia: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Message_to_Michael

Thanks for the fun show, as usual!

  28. Pete on November 3rd, 2009

Easy…. ‘Politician’-Cream. ‘Apolitical Blues’- Little Feat.
Thanks for all the great music.

Thorn In Her Side – The Subdudes

I think that is the title. the song has been on my ipod for years now. It is a reminder of Mr Bush. For those of us that are impatient with our new president, we need to remember that it is much easier to get into a war, than to get out.

My son will be going to Afghanistan in January. We need to get him and all the troops out of mid east.

  30. Michael on November 3rd, 2009

    “The New World” by X.

  31. Wattie Mink on November 3rd, 2009

Listening to the show in Bonnie Scotland – loving the theme – I met Strummer back in the day – he would always “stand up and be counted”….two requests…APB’s “something to believe in” or Jasmine Minks “Daddy Dog” both political genius…Daddy Dog even had a real Scottish politician doing the vocal…

  32. Barry on November 3rd, 2009

The Great American Eagle Tragedy – Earth Opera

Money And Corruption/I’m Your Man – The Kinks

Ain’t Got No Home – Clarence “Frogman” Henry

The Working Man – Creedence Clearwater Revival

I Hate Banks – Mojo Nixon and Skid Roper

Where The Hell’s My Money – Mojo Nixon and Skid Roper

You Never Give Me Your Money – The Beatles

Hope of Deliverance – Paul McCartney

God Bless The Child – Blood, Sweat and Tears

Hey Mr. President – Crack The Sky
