    Well, let’s see –

“We Can Be Together” (Jefferson Airplane) (you may have to ‘bleep’)

    “The Wall” (Pink Floyd)

“Sitting On A Fence” (The Rolling Stones) (Yes, I am really reaching there)

“A Thin Line Between Love and Hate” (The Pretenders version)

“Ain’t No Mountain (High Enough)” (Marvin Gaye/Tammy Tyrell version and/or, Diana Ross version)

“Society’s Child” (Janis Ian) (Yes, another ‘stretch’)

“If You Don’t Know Me By Now” (Harold Melvin & the Blue Notes version and/or, Simply Red version)

Breaking down barriers you say? How about the biggest barrier of all….

    Peter Gabriel “Shaking The Tree”

” Across The Great Divide ” — The Band

I think you just have to play CSNY’s “Chipping Away,” no?

I would also suggest “Barricades and Brickwalls” by Kasey Chambers and “Jericho” by Joni Mitchell (or the k.d. lang cover).

One song I love that’s about breaking down internal barriers is the Indigo Girls’ “Closer to Fine”. As human beings, most of us have had to go through that process of self examination and discovery, often many times. Ultimately after the barriers are taken down we learn that our answers are within and when we stop struggling, we find our peace.

Paul Simon’s “Something So Right” (they’ve got a wall in China..), Pink Floyd’s “The Wall” (we don’t need no wall in Berlin..), Michael Jackson’s “Off the Wall” (don’t stop till you get it down..) Wallflowers (one headlight- to shine the beacon of freedom..), but # 1 pick must be “THE WALL”- KANSAS (on Leftoverture, Best of Kansas,etc.)- a truly great band we babyboomers grew up with…….all we are is dust in the wind

I Love The Sound Of Breaking Glass by Nick Lowe

    Wrecking Ball by Neil Young

    Broke Down by Slaid Cleaves

Keep Talking by Pink Floyd. The barriers in that song are 2 fold. Steven Hawkings speaks in the background. Talk about tearing down an obstacle!

I recommend “The Wall” by Pam Rose. It’s great. I saw her in Nashville, TN this weekend at the Bluebird Cafe. I believe she has the following website: pamrose.com.

I actually anticipated this when I heard it was the 20th anniversary of the fall of the wall. I told my daughter, on the way to school, that I bet Claudia is going to base the question of the day on this theme.

Immediately I thought of the very dark, “First we take Manhattan and then we take Berlin” by Leonard Cohen.

Also The Call’s “The Walls Came Down” and
“Tweeter and the Monkey Man” by The Travelling Wilburys. – “…and the walls came down, all the way to hell.”

In celebration of the 20th anniversary of the fall of the Berlin Wall,
what could be a better piece to play than this cover of “Lost in Supermarket”
by Emir Kusturica and the No Smoking Orchestra?

Walls by Gordon Lightfoot comes to mind. Yes, I know I have a somewhat limited imagination but the lyric ‘I’m just a name scratched upon your wall.’ Reminds me of all the writings left on the wall as it fell. The one that I am most fond of is ‘The last one out, turn off the lights.’

Regarding songs about walls, how about “Volunteers” by Jefferson Airplane ?

There is a NY artist, gaining steam named Caleb Hawley.
He is a finalist in the New York Singer/songwriter Circle
contest, [finals next week at The Bitter End.]

This is the song that has been getting him noticed and in this optimistic uptempo tune is a verse about the
    Wall in Germany coming down.

Attached is the mp3, it’s also on his myspace page.
Great tune, up and coming star, go for it!

I would guess you’ve gotten this one, but “Burning Down the House” –
    Talking Heads, works for me.

Also, saw Keb Mo at Tarrytown this weekend — what a great show. He’s an
incredibly engaging performer — I’d see him every week if I could.

Breaking Down the Walls of Heartache by Dexy or Edwin Starr

I have to nominate it once again (didn’t make the election day cynicism question list): We Can Be Together by the Airplane has this triumphal last chorus that goes Tear Down The Walls.

Thanks for generally making my mornings.

Call it serendipidy or karma or whatever you’d like; I had the Rascals’ song “People Got to Be Free” in my head all weekend long.

I wish the story behind my request were more profound, but there you are.
