In commemoration of Roald Dahl, who penned the classic children’s books like “James in the Giant Peach,” we rock out to songs about fruit in the Question of the Day!

…First thing that popped into my head: Last Mango in Paris, Jimmy Buffett. He may actually be king of fruit songs if you think about it: Grapefruit, Juicy Fruit and Coconut telegraph both qualify as well.

Hehe! Fruit Salad! Ok, let’s put some ingredients into the recipe for today.

PEACHES and HERB – Shake Your Groove Thing or Reunited or Easy As Pie (Peaches AND Pie great for Thanksgiving!)

    Cherry, Cherry – Neil Diamond

Banana Boat Song (Day-O) – Harry Belafonte

Funny, I had all really old ones come to mind. Well, someone has to keep these songs alive!!
Love Roald Dahl! Could have celebrated Charlie and the Chocolate Factory and done songs about CHOCOLATE for the Chocoholics among us!!!

    Thanks for the fun, Claudia!
(and Have a great Thanksgiving and a very happy Birthday on 11/28!)

    Obvious and old!:

    Tutti Frutti – Little Richard
Apples, Peaches, Pumpkin Pie – Jay and the Techniques (I admit I had to google who sang that!) (a bit of Thanksgiving food in this one!)
You are the Sunshine of my Life – Stevie Wonder (“you are the apple of my eye”)

    The obscure, and old!:

    Chiquita Banana – Carmen Miranda

Well, these are fairly “pop” so may not fit the format. But I gave it a shot!

    Have a great day!

I’m sure there are so many songs with fruit – but the one that jumps out for me is Chris Smither’s “No Love Today.” While on the Jersey Shore over the 4th of July weekend I had that song in my head at least twice a day when the fresh fruit truck drove up to each motel and the driver rang (or banged) a big triangle to announce their arrival. I kept expecting him to yell out:

“I got ba-na-na, watermelon, peaches by the pound,
Sweet corn, mirleton, mo’ better than in town,
I got okra, enough to choke ya,
    Beans of every kind”

Don’t know if they’d have mirleton in Jersey though – think you need to go to NOLA for that. I’ve attached a photo of the fruit truck just for the fun of it.

    Happy Monday!

What an appropriate question, given that I just got back from L.A. (draw your own conclusions).

Two candidates this morning, one a very serious song, and the other one, not so much.

    “Strange Fruit” Billy Holiday

    “Coconut” Harry Nilsson.

    Enjoy your day!

  19. Steve on November 23rd, 2009

well, since they formed and recorded on the Apple label (OK,
JT did, too) it may behoove you to play some George?: “Apple Scruffs”
(could have requested the lengthy “Apple Jam”) off the remastered
    “All Things Must Pass” CD?

I love Chris Smither’s song “No Love Today” where he talks about bananas, peaches and watermelons and a few other obscure fruits and vegetables.

Also The Cranberries had a song that I liked way back, but don’t remember the name. Maybe someone else will know it!

    Happy Thanksgiving

  26. Fred on November 23rd, 2009

I tuned in a little late this morning, so I’m not clear why you’re asking for songs about fruit, but you obviously need to play “30,000 Pounds of Bananas,” and you obviously need to play the live version, which is much funnier than the studio recording.

There’s also a great song by Sinead O’Connor, on her album “Theology,” called “If I Had a Vineyard.”

And I think there’s some other song about a grapevine that gets played on the radio a lot.

  30. Bin on November 23rd, 2009

“Peel Me a Grape” Dianna Krall
    “Watermelon Mann” Herbie Hancock
    Have a peachy day

  31. Brian on November 23rd, 2009

    “Rasberries, Strawberries” the Kingston Trio

  32. Barry on November 23rd, 2009

I smiled recalling “30,000 Pounds of Bananas” by Harry Chapin, mentioned above. I have driven that hill in Scranton, Pennsylvania.

You all missed one of my favorites:

A SMALL FRUIT SONG – AL STEWART

    The lyrics:
“Said the apple.. to the orange/
oh I wanted you to come/
and kiss me to the core.
And then you could love me/
    like no other orange/
    has ever done/
    before.”
