You couldn't have found a better name for an album than the one gracing this fifth collection by soul and funk revivalists Sharon Jones and the Dap-Kings: Give The People What They Want. Here they give their fans ten songs brimming with classic soul vibes and heavy funk grooves. If there were any doubt as to the place this band holds in the funk/soul/R&B revivalist movement, it would be wiped away after one listen to this new effort.
This modern day, retro-soul journey is not only led by powerhouse lead vocalist Sharon Jones, but also by one of the masterminds behind the Brooklyn-based Daptone Records scene - bassist Bosco Mann (real name Gabriel Roth), who is also the album's producer. At his side is his business partner, saxophonist Neal Sugarman. Half the album's songs are written by Mann, while the other half are contributed by bandmembers Homer Steinweiss, Cochemea Gastelum and Joseph M. Crispiano.
Whether it's the upbeat punch of "Stranger To My Happiness," the smooth call for unity that is "We Get Along," "Making Up And Breaking Up (And Making Up And Breaking Up Over Again)" with its echoes of the Friends of Distinction, or "People Don't Get What They Deserve" -- there is no question that Give The People What They Want belongs right next to those Otis Redding albums in your collection.
