Getting To Know...Carmel Holt

Carmel Holt (shown above with Willy Mason) joined WFUV this spring as our midday host (10 am-2 pm) and assistant music director. Raised in Massachusetts and Connecticut, Carmel has a degree in music composition and vocal performance from Bard College.  Previously, she was at WDST in Woodstock, NY, working her way up to become the midday host and an award winning music director.

At WFUV since:

March 18, 2013 full time, part time host since January 2012.

What are two or three things we might find you doing away from the station?

1. Going to shows – I love live music, and try to go out to shows as many times a week as possible, and now that I am here in New York, I expect that I’ll be out most nights of the week!

2. Cooking – My other passion in life (besides music) is food. I love to cook and have been told that I’m pretty good at it. I love the whole process, including the food shopping – especially when it involves farmer’s markets, or small green grocers. Nothing makes me happier than sharing a delicious meal with friends!

3. Walking in the woods – I love to have time in nature. It always brings me back to a peaceful state of mind. While I love technology, it’s really important for me to have “unplugged” time, connecting with the real world.

What would WFUV listeners be surprised to know about you?

In addition to my radio life, I free-lanced as a graphic designer for nearly 10 years.

What was the first record (single or album) you bought?

It was either Madonna’s self-titled debut, or Prince’s Purple Rain. Hey, it was the 80s!

What would you become if you didn’t have a career in radio?

A cook/restaurant owner.

Do you cook? Do you have a signature dish?

See above! No signature dish, but I love to cook Sunday brunch – pancakes are a specialty.

What wacky thing would you do if you had the time (or guts)?

I don’t know how wacky it is, but if I had the time and money (and, okay, if I had the guts), I would sell everything and travel.
