New Music Monday is a collection of the best new releases in music each week. We share them with you every Monday, every hour on WFUV.
Booker T - Sound The Alarm
Memphis's Stax Records has produced such legendary soul singers and musicians as Steve Cropper, Otis Redding, and Booker T. Jones. Today we feature Sound The Alarm, the first Stax album since 1971. The sound is classic Booker T. Stax soul (think "Green Onions") but with a modern twist. All in all a great record for the summer.
The Baptist Generals - Jackleg Devotional To The Heart
The Baptist Generals hail from Denton, Texas, and Jackleg Devotional To The Heart marks their first album in nearly ten years. Songwriter Chris Flemons reportedly recorded and then trashed the albums first attempt in 2005 but we don't think it was such a bad decision, because this record is so good. It's a great rainy day album that brings to mind artists like Beck and Bonnie Prince Billy.
Tedeschi Trucks Band - "Part Of Me"
On August 20th, Tedeschi Trucks Band will release Made Up Mind. Today we feature a song from that upcoming album, "Part Of Me". It's classic Tedeschi Trucks and much like Booker T, it's a soulful and smooth track perfect for late summer nights.
Sam Amidon - Bright Sunny South
Sam Amidon, the husband of Beth Orton, bookends his new album with a Tim Mcgraw cover ("My Old Friend") and Mariah Carey one ("Shake It Off"). In between, we get slow, mellow music that Amidon himself described as "lonesome", yet it itsn't as melancholy as it may sound. Rather its a blend of unique lyrics and instrumentation which we aren't sure we've ever heard before but we are sure we like.
Robert Randolph & The Family Band - "Born Again"
"Born Again" is a soulful, upbeat tune that demands to be played loud and sung to. It's a song from Robert Randolph & The Family Band's new album, Lickety Split, out July 16th. On it, Randolph sings, "I feel born again/there's been a change in my life/I'm so satisfied", and folks, we're satisfied too.
Lou Doillon - "Devil Or Angel"
Eleanor Friedberger - Personal Record
Ellen Friedberger, best known as half of The Feiry Furnaces, has emerged with her second solo record, the fun, rollicking Personal Record. It has a very 70's feel to it but also brings to mind modern artists like Cat Power and Yo La Tengo. If you're looking for an upbeat, freewheeling record for the summer: this is it.We also suggest checking out Friedberger's hilarious album teaser.
