As you no doubt know, Saturday, July 14 is the 100th anniversary of Woody Guthrie's birth, and WFUV will celebrate Woody’s life and legacy with special programming all weekend. On Friday the Question of the Day with Don McGee (in for Claudia) at 9:30 a.m. and Under the Covers (with Eric Holland in for Darren) at 12 noon will be devoted to Woody's music, while Dennis Elsas will feature Bruce Springsteen's takes on Woody, some new songs based on Woody's New York City lyrics, and tribute performances by The New Multitudes (Jay Farrar, Yim Yames, Anders Parker and Will Johnson).
On Saturday’s Mixed Bag, Don McGee will include some Woody Guthrie covers and originals, plus a few of the “collaborations” between Woody and current songwriters. On the Sunday Breakfast John Platt will air highlights of interviews with Woody’s daughter, Nora Guthrie, and the Woody biographer Joe Klein, along with comments from artists such as Slaid Cleaves, Eliza Gilkyson, and Janis Ian. Lastly, during Sunday’s broadcast of Woody's Children Bob Sherman continues his month-long celebration of the centennial with recordings of Woody's songs by John McCutcheon, Tom Paxton, Joel Rafael, and others.
It's a Wonder Wheel of Woody!
