Advocacy Group Pushes to Stop Construction of New Garbage Facility

With construction underway on a garbage transfer facility on Manhattan's Upper East Side, community residents and advocates are concerned for their health and safety.

Pledge 2 Protect, a community advocacy group rallied Thursday to stop construction of the East 91st Street Transfer facility. The group's president Kelly Nimmo-Guenther fears increased truck traffic from the facility will create dangerous conditions for pedestrians at a busy nearby intersection.

"With over four-hundred thousand children and pedestrians crossing that intersection, it is not if an accident happens, it is when," says Nimmo-Guenther.

Nimmo-Guenther says she would like to see constriction on the transfer station halted. But, in realizing that's an unlikely reality, she wants the access ramp to the facility moved to make neighborhood streets safer. She also wants stricter measures to reduce air and noise pollution.

The Mayor's office says it's committed to working with the community to be the best possible neighbor.
