Art of the DJ: Jody Denberg

Our "Art of the DJ" series heads to Austin today... Hear from KUT's Jody Denberg - on FUV at 7:15pm and online anytime.

KUT's Jody Denberg is from the FUV listening area, but he's been a mainstay on Austin radio for three decades. How did he get his start? Has the "Art of the DJ" changed since then? In this conversation with Rita Houston, Jody shares his unique view of creating great music radio, as both a veteran DJ and a relative newcomer to public radio.

Jody Denberg

Meet Jody Denberg:

Jody Denberg is a 30-year veteran of the Austin, Texas airwaves. A native New Yorker, he began his broadcasting career in Texas in 1981 on KLBJ-FM (AOR), and left to become Program Director of KGSR-FM (AAA) in 1990. He departed KGSR in 2009 and after a year’s sabbatical resurfaced on NPR affiliate KUT (behind the mic in the same building on the University Of Texas campus that he graduated from).

An accomplished journalist whose work has been published in Rolling Stone, Texas Monthly, Record and countless other publications, Denberg has produced over 4 dozen promotional interview discs, working with artists including Paul McCartney, R.E.M., Joni Mitchell, Tom Waits, Neil Young, Lucinda Williams, Yoko Ono, and Willie Nelson. In addition, CDs of live performances he produced for KGSR have raised over $2 million dollars for the SIMS Foundation.

Jody Denberg is a featured DJ in a permanent radio exhibit in the Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame. He makes his home in Austin with his wife Barbara and their three cats and is proud to have made music onstage with Pete Townshend, Ian McLagan and Ronnie Lane of The Small Faces/Faces, Billy Bragg, Alejandro Escovedo, Todd Rundgren, Doug Sahm, Loudon Wainwright III and many more of his heroes.
