Bagpipes Commemorate Anniversary of 9/11

South Broadway was filled with a different noise Friday afternoon: bagpipes.

The pipes were played to commemorate the 15th anniversary of 9/11. Bagpipers, drummers and police units from all over the United States and Canada were there to honor the lost lives of friends and family. This is the first year the NYPD has held this parade, and many people came out to watch in support. One of them was Brooklyn native Freyda Markow, who was at ground zero on day one. Shevolunteered at an on-site relief center for nine months and witnessed New Yorkers walk into the center with "hollow eyes and sadness." For her, Markow said, 9/11 is no longer just a date.

"When we close our eyes or go to sleep, we're back there," she said of New Yorkers who witnessed the attack.

More memorial events will be held this coming Sunday.
