Bloomberg Calls on Lawmakers to Institute Univeral Background Checks for Gun Buyers

Mayors Against Illegal Guns releases report that exposes loopholes in gun purchases

Mayor Bloomberg announced the findings of an investigation aimed at exposing loopholes in federal and state gun laws.  The report found that people who wouldn't normally pass background checks for buying firearms have been able to purchase them from online private sellers.

The investigation advocates for universal background checks so that criminals are unable to buy guns from these online distributors.  In light of a slew of gun violence around the country, Bloomberg says legislators must take action now more than ever.

"The fact that those in Washington continue to stand by as innocent victims: children, parents, neighbors, and friends are gunned down, is a national disgrace" Said Bloomberg.

The investigation was conducted by Mayors Against Illegal Guns, a nationwide coalition that includes more than one thousand mayors.  Bloomberg and Boston Mayor Thomas Menino founded the task-force in 2006.
