Bratton Faces Tension at Council Budget Hearing

Tensions between New York's Police Department and the public seeped into the City Council chambers today.  Police Commissioner Bill Bratton encountered a number of hecklers as he testified about the NYPD's $4.9 billion budget during a Council hearing.

Some objectors shouted, "No new cops," a jab at past calls from Bratton and the Council for 1,000 additional police officers. The outbreaks resulted in security clearing all public from the hearing.  Bratton called the situation regrettable.

"It's unfortunate that the few, a selfish few, would seek to interrupt a public process."

Bratton says the disruption exemplified what's been dubbed the Great Divide between citizens and the criminal justice system.  He says bridging this gap will be the biggest challenge of 2015 within the city and across the nation.
