Bronx County Dead Last in State Health Rankings

Borough Hosting Health Summit Next Month

The Bronx is the unhealthiest county in New York State.  That's according to a new survey of county health statistics from the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation and the University of Wisconsin.

Melissa Cebollero is the Bronx Director of Health and Human Services. She says it's hard to talk to Bronxites about their health when they're dealing with so many other problems.

"There are so many challenges to quality of life, that speaking to them about what they're eating or about how much exercise they're getting really falls to the bottom of that priority list."

The Bronx got a particularly low ranking in clinical care.  It was also last in the state in social and environmental factors, like poverty and crime rate.

Cebollero said she's aware of borough's health issues.  She's planning a Health and Wellness Summit at Fordham University next month to hear directly from Bronx locals.

"There's so much controversy over public health policies these days and I think people feel that their voice isn't heard. So we urge Bronxites to come on April 6th."

According the study, Livingston County was the state's healthiest.  Westchester, just North of the Bronx, came in 7th. Rockland, Putnam, and Nassau counties were all among the state's 10 healthiest.
