Bronx Kicks Off Dominican Pride Week

A week of celebrations will lead up to the Bronx Dominican Day Parade on Sunday.

The Bronx's Dominican community marked the beginning of Dominican Pride week today.

Bronx Borough President Ruben Diaz and the Bronx Dominican Parade Committee directors announced the week of celebrations that includes concerts, a Gala banquet and a VIP breakfast.

The week's events lead up to the 24th annual Bronx Dominican Day Parade on Sunday, July 28th. The parade will feature cultural groups, artists and marching bands.

Over 40 percent of New York City’s Dominican population lives in the Bronx.  Diaz said this population is an important party of the borough’s diversity.

“Now we have more Dominicans living in the Bronx than anywhere, including Washington Heights, outside of the Dominican Republic,” Diaz said, “and as the borough president that makes me happy, that makes me proud.”

The parade committee will also honor Dominican American students who have earned an academic scholarship.

Sunday’s Parade will march at noon along the Grand Concourse between 161st and 184th Streets.
