City Council Proposes Bill to Make it Easier for Transgender New Yorkers to Change Birth Certificates

Legislation has been proposed in City Council that would make it easier for transgender and gender-nonconforming New Yorkers to change the sex on their birth certificate.
In New York City, a liuscned medical professional's written approval is recquired for a legal gender change on a birth certificate.
The propsed bill would allow individuals to self-attest, removing the need for a physician's endorsement.
City Council Member Mark Levine says when individuals' documents don't match the way they identify they are far more vulnerable to discrimination.
If the legislation is passed, New York City will join the ranks of California, Oregon, and Washington State.
