Cuomo Proposes Independent Commission to Reform NY Redistricting
Governor Andrew Cuomo is seeking to establish a commission to independently reform the process of configuring congressional and state legislative district lines.
The Democratic governor's bill, the Redistricting Reform Act of 2011, is the latest push against the Senate’s Republican majority, which had been Cuomo’s earliest and strongest supporter for his economic platform.
Republican Senate Majority Leader Dean Skelos said he’ll review several proposals for redrawing districts, and that he’ll pursue independent redistricting if it’s feasible. Republicans won the majority in last November’s elections after signing a pledge to vote for independent redistricting.
Skelos is also raising concerns over a Cuomo reform measure that would require lawmakers to disclose clients in their private practices.
There was no immediate comment Thursday from the Assembly’s Democratic majority.
