Customers of Struggling Bookshop Show Support with "Cash Mob"

Local blogger's event brings in $1,200 in one hour.

A bookstore on Manhattan's Lower East Side is struggling to stay afloat.

A petition last fall led to a rent reduction for St. Mark's Bookshop from its landlord Cooper Union college. But, the rent cut isn't enough to save the store. They're still struggling to pay to keep their shelves stocked. Co-Owner Terry McCoy says a recent cash mob organized by a local blogger got a group of customers to shop in the store for an hour.

"During that one hour, we did $1,200 worth of business which is considerably more, probably three times as much as we would've done in that hour," he said, "It was very beneficial."

The store is looking to expand its online presence and offer in-store events like readings and book signings.
