Dan Lauria: From Lombardi to Red Ryder
Most people know Dan Lauria as the father in the iconic family drama “The Wonder Years,” the Fred Savage star vehicle. More recently, though, especially for New Yorkers as Dan mentions in our interview, he is now recognized quite handily as Vince Lombardi, for his portrayal in the Broadway hit two years ago.
Now, he currently portrays Jean Shepherd in the new Broadway musical “A Christmas Story,” narrating the wise voice of Ralphie from the hit Christmas classic. Currently playing at the Lunt-Fontanne theater, the cult film is resurrected on stage in all its leg lamp, tongue-to-pole-sticking, BB gun glory. Aside from some extraneous musical numbers, the show is tethered to the original narrative and relies heavily on the dancing, singing, and acting prowess of many young children.
Whether your tradition is re-watching the DVD one wintry night or dizzying yourself with the 24 hour TBS marathon, Ralphie has become the poster boy of Christmas characters. You can now hear him sing, too.
In our chat, we discuss Dan’s new role, look back at “Lombardi,” and talk New York sports of course! Take a listen and enjoy
