De Blasio, Bloomberg, and Bette Midler Unite to Plant Millionth Tree

The Million Trees NYC Program not only met its goal today, it did so 2 years ahead of schedule.  Legendary actor and singer Bette Midler joined lawmakers and volunteers to watch the millionth tree be planted at Joyce Kilmer Park in the Bronx.

Midler has long been a champion of parks and community gardens. She launched the New York Restoration project to help "green" the city after driving around in the mid '90s and spotting things she just didn't expect to see.

"I saw cars that had been stripped...car thieves who had taken these cars apart and set them on fire in the parks," Midler recalled. "I said there's kids in this neighborhood, they want to come to the park and they don't want to see a burned out old car carcass."

Her organization eventually worked with then-Mayor Michael Bloomberg to launch the Million Trees Initiative.

Thanks to additional funding the city plans to plant another 150 thousand trees over the next 3 years.
