Deadline Looms to Enter NJ Senate Race
It could be a scramble Monday for potential U.S. Senate candidates to file their paperwork with New Jersey election officials.
The seat opened when Sen. Frank Lautenberg died last week.
Gov. Chris Christie decided to schedule a primary for August and a special general election for October. He also appointed state Attorney General Jeffrey Chiesa to hold the Senate seat until voters have their say.
The filing deadline is 4 p.m. Monday. Newark Mayor Cory Booker and Reps. Rush Holt and Frank Pallone are in the Democratic race. The only declared Republican so far is former Bogota Mayor Steve Lonegan.
Chiesa, who will be sworn in on Monday, says he won't seek the seat on a permanent basis.
