Engaging Youth at the United Nations

The United Nations is traditionally a forum for seasoned diplomats to talk about world issues.  But young people are also playing a part in shaping world issues.

There are approximately 1.8 billion young people in the world right now, and that number is only growing.  So the United Nations has made it a priority to engage young people.

Nicol Perez is the United States Youth Observer to the U.N.  She meets with young people across the United States and UN diplomats, and tries to bridge the gap between the two.

"High level officials, people at the U.N., people at the State Department, people in missions around the world are listening to young people and they're looking at their opinions," she said.

Nicol encourages young people to use social media and community activism to affect policy.
