Fire Forces Evacuation At Chelsea Market

Firefighters have put out a smoky rooftop blaze that forced the evacuation of the Chelsea Market building in Manhattan.

Fire officials say about 300 people were evacuated from the building on West 15th Street as a precaution.

The fire was reported around noon Tuesday in a cooling tower that was being serviced.

Large plumes of smoke billowed through the neighborhood.

One person was treated for smoke inhalation.

People were let back into the building within an hour.

Chelsea Market is a block long, a block wide and 8 stories high. About 35 vendors have businesses at the market.

NY1 television said on Twitter that it evacuated its newsroom there.
