In the earliest opener in school history, Fordham (1-0) jumped out to a 24-3 half time lead and added enough in the second half to overcome a Rhode Island (0-1) revival for a 51-26 victory.
Michael Nebrich facilitated the offense, tossing four touchowns and running for another. Brian Wetzel caught a four yard touchdown in the first quarter and a second half touchdown from 49 yards using a brutal stiff arm to gain the final fifteen of the run. Sam Ajala scored Fordham's other arial strikes, the first a 29 yard pass to open the Rams' offensive account this season, and the second a 64 yard catch and run in the second half. On the ground, Carlton Koonce picked up where he left off to the tune of 14 carries for 90 yards, including a fifty yard carry to set up the initial Wetzel touchdown.
The Fordham defense, which allowed 277 yards rushing to a squad that averaged less than 90 yards per game last season, added two game changing interceptions. The first to stop a scoring drive in the first half, when Jake Dixon stepped in front of a short pass. The second was a deep lob that was stolen by JQ Bowers in the third quarter, and run 61 yards to pay dirt.
