Fordham outlasts Columbia for the Liberty Cup

Fordham Sports Information

Fordham takes the Liberty Cup back to the Bronx for the third consecutive season

Fordham outlasted Columbia Saturday afternoon 20-13, claiming its third consecutive Liberty Cup title. In the 11th renewal of the Cup, it was the Rams defense who came up big near the end on Lions QB Sean Brackett. A key penalty against Brackett occurred when he threw a touchdown pass on fourth down with under 2 minutes to go, but his foot was over the line of scrimmage and Fordham regained possession and ran out the clock.

Rams senior running back Carlton Koonce had a career day, rushing for 265 yards and a touchdown. He also caught a touchdown pass from Ryan Higgins. With Michael Neibrich sidelined with an ACL injury against Cornell last week, the Rams offense had to change up their game plan this week and it favored Koonce. The Hofstra transfer had his way with the defense on a 93 yard TD run in the first quarter, the second longest run in school history. That made the score 7-3 Rams, and they never relinquished the lead.

Patrick Murray chipped in with a 51 yard field goal early in the fourth to stretch the lead to 20-13. That was all the Rams would need, as they improve to 3-1 on the season, and have now won 2 games in a row. Patriot League play begins next week in Bethlehem, PA when Fordham meets defending league champ Lehigh. Kickoff is at 12:30, and the One on One pre game report is at 12:20.
