Garland Jeffreys is the quintessential New Yorker, with a multiracial background and roots in Brooklyn. Now 73, Jeffreys is still at the top of his game. His fine new album, 14 Steps to Harlem, pays tribute to his hard-working father, his family, John Lennon, and his pal from Syracuse University, Lou Reed.

Jeffreys returned to WFUV with his band to talk about his family and his heroes. He also played three songs, including covers of the Beatles' "Help," the Velvet Underground's "I'm Waiting for the Man" and an original tune, "Venus," dedicated to his wife, Claire.
