"Hamilton" Lyric Inaccurate

Kean University historians have found that one of the lyrics in Broadway's smash hit "Hamilton" is inaccurate. Their problem is with an exchange heard in the song "A Winter's Ball," and has to do with Martha Washington, her pet tomcat and Alexander Hamilton. Leslie Odom Jr, who plays Aaron Burr in the musical, sings "Martha Washington named her feral tomcat after him." "That's true," responds Lin Manuel Miranda, who plays Alexander Hamilton.

Historians used to believe Washington named her pet after Hamilton because of the founding father's sexual exploits, but "Alexander Hamilton: The Formative Years" author Michael Newton said this is not true. The findings were unveiled today at Kean University's Liberty Hall Museum. Bill Schroh, the director of operations at the museum, hopes the event will help dispel some of the rumors surrounding Hamilton's casual affairs.

Kean University is located in Union, New Jersey, close to where Hamilton himself lived.
