Joanna Wallfisch grew up in a house of classical musicians in London. In 2012 she emigrated to New York City, where she spent five years before decamping to Los Angeles. I met her last year on a flight to Kansas City, where we were both headed for Folk Alliance International. While we were there, she told me her story of riding her bike from Portland to L.A. with her baritone ukelele on her back, stopping for concerts along the way, and played me a couple of songs. I was hooked.

After appearing at my "On Your Radar" series at Rockwood Music Hall, Wallfisch brought some topflight New York musicians to WFUV to perform a couple of songs from her new album, Blood and Bone, along with a brand new one. Like her travels, Wallfisch's music crosses over boundaries, with hints of jazz and classical music accenting her well-crafted pop songs.
