Liberty Report 7/6: A Step in the Right Direction
Thomas Humphrey, Long Island Dispatch
After a 77-59 home win against Seattle on Sunday, the Liberty are within shouting distance in the Eastern Conference. They're 5 games out at 5-9, and have a chance to improve even further, playing the 2nd place Chicago Sky at 8:30. The team will be without Plenette Pierson for another game, and without veteran Kelly Miller. She was released earlier this week and replaced with Katelan Redmon, who was drafted by New York this year, then cut on May 27th.
With these two definitely out, it remains to be seen whether or not Kia Vaughn will play. The team's go-to bigman suffered a concussion Sunday, but when Cappie Pondexter was asked postgame if they'd have her back in time for tonight's game, she responded, "There's no doubt in my mind."
Essence Carson shined against the Storm, scoring 22 and rejuvenating the offense after Vaughn went down. If she can continue to score at a torrid pace as she did early in the year, the Liberty will have a dangerous backcourt for opposing defenses.
Don't count the Liberty out yet, with a month off after their game on July 13th, the team will have plenty of time to rest, work out the kinks, and let players heal from injuries. With a strong finish to the season, the team could surge into the playoffs - and maybe even win a couple of games.
