Looking to Combat Social-Media Fueled Violence, NYPD Doubles Gang Unit
The NYPD will be doubling the size of its gang unit to combat a surge in social media-fueled violence.
Police Commissioner Raymond Kelly was to unveil the plan Tuesday at a law enforcement conference in San Diego.
Kelly says the NYPD will increase the number of detectives in its gang unit to 300 from 150. He says the reinforcements will focus largely on loosely affiliated groups of teens who trade dares and insults on Facebook.
Kelly says the groups aren't like traditional street gangs involved in drug dealing. Instead, they're mostly concerned with protecting turf.
