Moms Lead Rally Against Gun Violence

An anti-gun violence organization that began online had their first major event this morning in New York City.

One Million Moms for Gun Control held a march across the Brooklyn Bridge culminating in a rally at City Hall. They want to send a message to Congress to pass President Obama's gun control proposals including a ban on assault weapons.

The group was founded five weeks ago by Shannon Watts, a mother of five from Indianapolis. The self proclaimed "accidental activist" says the morning of the Newtown shooting she went online and decided to take action. Now the organization has 75 chapters nationwide and over 30 thousand supporters.

Watts says, "This is about using the internet but also using moms on the ground constantly until we see change."

Local New York mom Dawn McDonald noted that "the events of Newton as a mom affected me very deeply and contine to affect my husband and I. We just feel like we need to do something now, the time has finally come."

The organization plans on continuing with its public events, with a silent march in Washington, D.C. on Saturday.
