Morning Brief: December 23

New York City’s mayor has announced that non-union workers will be granted six weeks of paid parental leave. Bill de Blasio unveiled the new initiative Tuesday; it will affect over 20,000 of the city’s union-less workers. The new leave days will cost a total of $15 million, a sum that will be paid for by cutting long-serving workers’ vacations by two days, and scrapping a planned 0.47% raise for managers. But de Blasio says those sacrifices are worth it. “New York City,” he said, “is leading by example, putting us at the forefront of paid parental leave policies around the country.”
