Morning Brief: February, 3

Recently in New York City, there have been numerous crime incidents related to knife stabbings in the city’s subway system. Yesterday, a man was slashed in the face on the No. 3 train in Brooklyn. So far, there have been nine stabbings and slashings in January. Compared to this time last year, the city has seen a 20 percent increase in stabbings and slashings underground. But NY Daily News reports that Police Commissioner Bill Bratton said, “This is New York and occasionally the media and police get focused on a series of incidents, and that’s what happened here.” He says a more concerning issue on the subway is pickpocketing. On this day in 1959, multiple rock and roll musicians were killed in a plane crash near Clear Lake, Iowa. These musicians include Buddy Holly, Ritchie Valens, and J.P. “The Big Bopper” Richardson. The day they died is known as “The Day the Music Died.” Singer Don Mclean sings about this day in his song “American Pie.”
