Morning Brief: November 26

The flagship Macy’s store at Herald Square is emerging, finally, from a long renovation. The changes are many, but at least one thing has stayed the same as ever, to the delight of many shoppers—the store’s iconic wooden escalators. The escalators (which were known as moving stairs when they were first installed) have been a fixture of the store for 95 years. And though they’re old, the oak and ash contraptions are still as reliable (and up to code) as ever.
