New app to Navigate NYC School Calendar

A New York City Public School teacher wants to help parents, teachers, students and staffs keep track of important school dates.

John Tran who is a high school art teacher in Brooklyn, has created the New York City School Calendar app. The app imports dates including school closings, staff development days and regents days directly onto iPhones.

The dates are taken from the official New York City School calendar.

Tran came up with the idea a year ago after noting that with a variety of apps on the market, there should be an app that provides quick access to information for parents, teachers and students. In the past, he would manually import the school calendar on his iphone and have students and staff come up to him and ask for the information.

He says the app will make it easier for parents to plan.

“Some parents want to plan ahead and know when school is off so they could have vacation with their kids or know when to set up babysitting service for the kids. With this app it makes it easier for them.”

Tran who has tested the app with co-workers, says it is convenient to have this information directly at your fingertips.

“They were like oh thank you because I lost that Calendar. I had it on my refrigerator somewhere and I couldn’t find it.”

The app is available in three languages and will soon also work for the BlackBerry and Android smart phones.
