A New Brooklyn Task Force Aims To Protect The LGBT Community

Brooklyn District Attorney Charles Hynes created the panel because he said a lot of crimes against the LGBT community go unreported.

The task force will provide resources to the community, including a 24-hour hotline for hate crime victims.

Hynes said, "There are many reasons why victims will not report a hate crime. They may be afraid of any negative consequences at work, they might not want to reveal their sexuality to their family."  Hynes said he hopes the hotline will reverse the under-reporting of hate crimes. "These initiatives do not just protect victims of violence. Bullying against members of this community is something that also needs to be reported and prosecuted to the full extent of the law."
