Program just in time for Independence Day fireworks.
A New York City pilot program will use trained volunteers and technology to help track down lost pets.
The program will be officially launched Monday, just in time for the holiday. Organizers say pets may try to run away when they're scared by Fourth of July fireworks - and should be kept safely at home.
The announcement was made by the Mayor's Alliance for NYC's Animals, the ASPCA, and Animal Care & Control.
The program is designed to bolster the families' own searches
If you lose or find a pet, you can report it on the animal-care agency's website. That helps get the search in motion.
The supervised volunteers will work to match shelter animals with reports on that website, and on other lost-and-found websites.
