New York City Taxi Drivers to Ask for Fare Hike

The Taxi Workers Alliance wants to ask the city for a fare hike due to high gas prices.

The organization representing New York City taxi drivers says it will ask the city for a fare hike because of soaring gas prices.

The head of the Taxi Workers Alliance, Bhairavi Desai, says she will formally request the increase next week.

She says the proposed hike would amount to about $1.50 more for a typical ride.

Taxi and Limousine Commission Chairman David Yassky said he understands that when gas hits $4.50 a gallon, it can be hard for the drivers "to pay the rent and put food on the table." He said he will give their request the consideration it's due.
